Meet The Maker: Lou Clifton
Have you ever stopped to think about the craftsmanship that goes into the shoes on your feet? For Lou Clifton, founder of Shoe School, shoemaking isn’t just a craft—it’s a lifelong passion and a way to connect with creativity and community.
It all began with a pair of purple 8-hole Dr Martens she saved for as a teenager. Those boots sparked an obsession with how shoes were made—a fascination that grew into a career and a global adventure of learning and teaching.
Lou’s journey to becoming a shoemaker wasn’t straightforward. With no formal shoemaking courses available in New Zealand, she took a leap of faith and travelled to Australia to learn the craft. Back home, she began sourcing and piecing together antique shoemaking equipment, slowly building her studio from scratch.
As the maker’s movement took off, Lou’s dream of sharing her craft with others started to take shape. After years of self-taught practice, she interned in Japan to refine bespoke techniques and later studied cowboy boot crafting in the USA.
These experiences, combined with her determination and passion, have made Lou a master of her trade—and a natural teacher.
Since its launch, Shoe School has helped thousands of students design and craft their own custom footwear. Lou’s workshops aren’t just about learning a skill—they’re about celebrating creativity, sharing stories, and connecting with others.
Every step of the process is designed to be approachable, fun, and inspiring, whether you’re a total beginner or someone who’s always been curious about shoemaking. From selecting materials to sewing and constructing, Lou guides students through creating something truly unique—and totally wearable.
